Nature has developed the most pure and functional forms over billions of years of evolution.

Stimulated by the observation of nature, the artist creates in this series of paintings a believable universe, and that is full of changing processes of life. Having captured the underlying movement of organic growth, she presents the viewer with tantalizing clues. These indicate that energy and light bring forth subtle shapes, which emerge from the formless into form.

The series of Living Matter in Rhythm relates to synaesthesia. The paintings, translucent and alive with movement, look powerful on white walls and would be most suitable for a concert hall or other public building. The series is best kept together as one opus, to allow for the full visual and emotional impact.

The impulse to paint these paintings came from the artist's intense observation of light and nature.

"Complementing the theme of exploring new understanding at the Conference was a collection of 25 paintings by Cambridge artist Rhea Quien. This series of large canvases was hung in the College's spacious dining room. Inspired by being alone in the natural environment of the Alps and the Pyrenees, Rhea expressed in these works indefinable shapes which are suspended as a focal point against a darkly contrasting background. These forms glow in their translucence with energy and purpose. 'Living Matter in Rhythm' transformed the dining hall with light as much as a powerful symphony transforms a concert hall with sound." - Extract from a review by Daniel Rounding, International Conference 'Light, Colour, and Sound for Health.'   Queen's College.  Cambridge 2001.
